RAM and storage: how much you actually need

12 GB of RAM is not a score to maximise, and the storage tier you pick is the decision most people regret. Here is how to choose both.

RAM and storage are the two specifications buyers most often get backwards. RAM is treated as a number to maximise, when past a certain point it does nothing you will notice. Storage is treated as an afterthought, when it is the one decision on a modern flagship you genuinely cannot revisit.

What RAM does

RAM holds applications that are open. When you switch back to an app still resident in RAM, it resumes instantly. When it has been evicted, the system rebuilds it from storage — the app restarts, a game reloads, a browser tab refetches, a form you were filling in is gone. That last experience is what people mean when they say a phone feels short on memory.

More RAM means more apps stay resident. It does not make any individual app run faster. A phone with 16 GB and a mid-range chipset is not quicker than one with 8 GB and a flagship chipset; it just holds more things at once.

How much is enough on Android

For messaging, social media, maps, and a browser, 8 GB is comfortable in 2026. For gaming alongside a camera app and a dozen background accounts, 12 GB is a real comfort margin. 16 GB is flagship territory and mostly buys headroom for the future and for on-device AI features, which are memory-hungry in a way older workloads were not.

What 16 GB will not do is make a mediocre camera good or a slow chipset fast. It is the specification most often used to make a mid-range phone look flagship on a comparison table, and it is the cheapest one for a manufacturer to inflate.

Some manufacturers advertise 'extended' or 'virtual' RAM, which reserves storage space to act as overflow memory. Storage is far slower than RAM, so this helps modestly at the margins. A phone advertising 8 GB plus 8 GB virtual is an 8 GB phone.

Why iPhone RAM numbers look low

The iPhone 16 Pro Max lists 8 GB against 16 GB on the Pixel 9 Pro. This is the clearest example of a specification that does not translate across operating systems.

iOS manages memory differently, applications are compiled and packaged differently, and Apple controls the hardware and software together closely enough to tune the behaviour. 8 GB on an iPhone does not behave like 8 GB on an Android phone. Comparing the raw figures across platforms tells you nothing useful — compare RAM within a platform, never across.

Storage is the decision that lasts

Every flagship in our catalog has no memory card slot. The tier you buy is the tier you keep for the life of the phone.

128 GB fills quickly if you shoot 4K video, and is workable if you mostly stream and keep your photo library in the cloud. 256 GB is the reasonable default for most people in 2026 and is where several manufacturers now start their flagship lines. 512 GB and 1 TB matter for video work, large offline media libraries, and anyone who keeps every photo locally.

One specific warning: if you plan to shoot ProRes on an iPhone or equivalent high-bitrate formats elsewhere, 256 GB is not enough. Those formats consume storage at a rate that surprises people — minutes of footage, not hours.

The number on the box is not what you get

The operating system, preinstalled applications, and system caches consume a meaningful share of nominal capacity before you save anything. Expect noticeably less than the advertised figure, with the gap proportionally worse on smaller tiers — which is part of why 128 GB feels tighter than the arithmetic suggests.

Storage also slows down as it approaches full. A phone at 95 percent capacity behaves worse than the same phone at 60 percent, and this is a common cause of an older phone feeling sluggish for reasons unrelated to its age.

Cloud storage is not a substitute

Cloud photo services genuinely reduce local pressure, but they are a recurring cost, they need connectivity to retrieve anything not cached, and the free tiers are small. Choosing 128 GB on the assumption that the cloud will absorb the difference works until you are somewhere without signal and want a photo from last year.

Work out what you actually use

Before choosing a tier, look at your current phone. Settings will tell you how much storage you are using and what is using it. If you are at 90 GB after three years, 128 GB on the next phone is a bad idea and 256 GB is comfortable. If you are at 40 GB, you have been paying for capacity you do not need.

This takes a minute and it is far more reliable than guessing from how heavy a user you think you are. Most people's storage use is remarkably stable between phones, because it is driven by habits rather than by the device.

The upgrade-tier arithmetic

Manufacturers price storage tiers well above what the components cost, which feels unfair and is still usually worth paying. The upgrade from 256 GB to 512 GB is a one-time cost spread across the life of the phone; running out of space is a daily irritation you cannot fix afterwards on a phone with no card slot.

Pick storage first, based on your files and how long you intend to keep the phone. Then pick RAM for how many applications you keep alive, within a platform rather than across one.
