eSIM and physical SIM: what changes when you travel

The SIM row on a spec sheet is often more consequential than the network row. What eSIM changes for travel, dual numbers, and switching phones.

The SIM row is one of the shortest on a specification sheet and one of the most likely to affect you. It determines whether you can run two numbers, how easily you can use a local network abroad, and how much friction there is in moving to your next phone.

What an eSIM is

A physical SIM is a removable chip carrying your subscriber identity. An eSIM is the same identity provisioned as a software profile onto a chip soldered into the phone. Functionally the network cannot tell the difference. Practically, the difference is that you cannot hold an eSIM in your hand.

That single fact drives everything else about them, in both directions.

What the SIM row actually tells you

Configurations vary more than people expect, and vary between regional variants of the same model. Some phones take two physical SIMs. Some take one physical plus an eSIM. Some support multiple eSIM profiles stored with one active. And some — every US iPhone since the iPhone 14 — have no physical tray at all.

That last case is the one that catches travellers, because a phone with no tray cannot fall back on a local prepaid card bought at an airport counter if the local carrier does not support eSIM.

The travel case, in both directions

For travel, eSIM is mostly an improvement. You can buy a travel data plan online before you land, scan a code, and arrive connected, keeping your home number active for calls and messages at the same time. There is no tray to open, no adapter, and no risk of losing a fingernail-sized piece of plastic in a hotel room.

The counter-argument is real too. eSIM support among small local carriers and prepaid brands is uneven, particularly outside major markets, and local prepaid tariffs bought in person are often much cheaper than eSIM travel plans sold to tourists. A phone with a physical tray keeps that option open. If you travel frequently to places where you buy a local SIM on arrival, a tray is a feature worth keeping.

Running two numbers

Separating work and personal numbers on one phone is the other common reason to read this row. Any dual-SIM arrangement handles it, whether that is two physical cards or one card plus an eSIM.

One detail worth checking: on many dual-SIM phones only one line is active at a time for data, and behaviour when a call arrives on the inactive line differs by phone and by carrier. Check what your specific combination does before relying on it for anything important.

Switching phones

This is where eSIM is genuinely worse, and where the advantage of a physical card becomes obvious. Moving a physical SIM is a paperclip and ten seconds. Moving an eSIM requires transferring the profile, which depending on the carrier means an in-app transfer, a QR code they email you, or a phone call to support.

Recent iOS and Android versions support direct device-to-device eSIM transfer, which works well when the carrier has implemented it. Not all have. If your phone is lost, stolen, or dead, recovering the eSIM onto a replacement is a support interaction rather than a five-second swap — and you may be doing it without a working phone, which is the part people do not anticipate.

Keeping a cheap backup phone useful is harder for the same reason.

Where the industry is going

The direction is clear: eSIM-only phones are becoming more common, starting with Apple in the US and spreading. Carrier support has improved substantially and continues to. For most people in well-served markets, an eSIM-only phone is now unremarkable.

The people for whom it still matters are frequent travellers to less-covered regions, anyone who swaps between phones often, and anyone whose carrier handles eSIM badly — which is worth checking before you commit, because it is a support-quality question rather than a technical one.

What to check before buying

Read the SIM row for the exact regional variant you are buying, not the model in general, because this is one of the specifications that differs most between markets for the same phone. Then check that your carrier supports eSIM and, specifically, that it supports transferring one to a new device without a shop visit.

Security is a genuine advantage of eSIM

One point in eSIM's favour that rarely gets mentioned: a physical SIM can be removed from a stolen phone and put in another handset, which lets a thief receive your calls and, more importantly, your SMS verification codes. An eSIM cannot be pulled out.

SIM-swap fraud — where an attacker persuades a carrier to move your number to their device — is a separate problem that eSIM does not solve, and it is the more common attack. Both are reasons to avoid SMS as your main second factor where an authenticator app is available.

A note on buying abroad

If you buy a phone in another country, check the SIM row for that market's variant rather than the one on a review from home. A US-market phone with no SIM tray is a meaningfully different product from the same model sold in Europe with a tray, and it is the kind of difference that only becomes apparent at an airport.
