Sony's phone brand is Xperia. It is a small, camera-and-display line aimed at people who already live in Sony's photo and headphone world, not at people who want the cheapest 120 Hz panel. 1 is the flagship with a 4K-class display in recent years. 5 is the compact sibling. 10 is the mid-ranger. The number is the tier, not the year.
An Xperia sheet still does things other Android flagships dropped: a 3.5 mm jack on many models, a microSD slot, and a side fingerprint button. The camera system uses Sony sensors and, on the 1-series, real focal-length primes rather than a single sensor plus crop. That does not automatically beat a Pixel at night; it is a different way of shooting.
Software is close to stock Android with a thin Sony layer. Update years are shorter than Google's seven-year Pixel window. Availability is the real constraint. Sony exited several markets. A 1-series phone may be Japan, Europe, and a handful of Asian stores, not a US nationwide carrier launch.

Sony does not run a Samsung-scale store network. Spare parts and screen repairs follow the importer or a specialist shop in most cities. That cost belongs in the decision next to the jack and the microSD slot.

Creator tools on a 1-series phone — a real shutter button, external monitor output, and cinema-oriented frame rates — are the reason some people pay flagship money for a low-volume brand. They are also the reason a 10-series sheet looks sparse next to it. If you wanted those tools, open the 1 page. If you wanted a cheaper Sony with a jack, the 10 page is the honest comparison, not a discounted 1.
